Operation Understanding Hampton Roads

Mission Statement

We are a diverse group of Americans who are drawn together by a shared goal of revitalizing the historic relationship between African Americans and Jews in our community in order to continue the struggle against discrimination and bigotry, and for an America of opportunity and justice for all its citizens.

We seek to create a climate in which responsible African American and Jewish leaders can speak out for our common human agenda – a compassionate, economically viable, safe and just society in which every person can share in the American dream.

To help achieve this, we set the following goals for OUHR:

  1. To meet regularly to discuss issues of mutual concern and to seek resolution whenever possible.
  2. To initiate programs, projects, or events that will enhance cooperation and understanding between our two peoples and benefit the greater Tidewater community.
  3. To promote constructive solutions to social problems by working together to reduce racism and prejudice, to increase access to economic opportunity, jobs, and health care, to improve the quality of education and family life, and to improve our community by combating drug abuse, crime and environmental problems.
